Planning Technician

Description: The incumbent is responsible for reviewing and managing applications to the Planning Department to assure compliance with regulations, researching and compiling information on a variety of planning issues, providing technical assistance to the public and staff, serving as recording secretary to the Board of Zoning Appeals, and maintaining data bases. This position works closely with the public on a regular basis to provide customer service on zoning issues.
Examples of Duties: • Provides technical assistance and information to staff and the public in the administration of land use regulations • Reviews applications to assure compliance with requirements • Reviews site plans to assure compliance with zoning regulations such as use, setbacks, and parking regulations • Serves as the recording secretary for the Board of Zoning Appeals which includes a monthly night meeting • Performs routine office tasks in designated program areas, including data entry, file management, copying, scanning documents and answering the telephone • Develops and maintains tracking systems, electronic and paper copy files and records • Prepares narrative staff reports and recommendations of limited complexity, such as conditional use permits, lot resubdivisions and standard variances • Researches and compiles information on a variety of planning issues • Prepares maps, charts, tables and PowerPoint presentations • Investigates violations of zoning regulations, including site visits • Attends public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate
Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in geography, planning, architecture or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
