Planning & Zoning Technician

City of Riverside

Salary Range: $49,800 - $69,700

This is an entry-level technical support position in the Community Development Department. Responsibilities include technical, administrative, fieldwork, and office support for the Community Development Department and the general public.

The position is distinguished from other administrative positions in that it requires technical knowledge and skills pertaining to the City’s zoning, planning, development, and code enforcement functions in addition to standard office support responsibilities.

Example of Duties

Provides zoning administrative support to the public by answering questions, processing complaints and information requests, and explaining application procedures and the development review process.

Evaluates for application completeness on zoning permits, development plans, variance requests, and subdivision reviews to assist the Zoning Administrator.

Assists with research, data analysis, and report preparation, including reviewing internal and County records, and updating information on zoning regulations, the comprehensive plan, and department policies.

Conducts field investigations for minor code enforcement cases, including tall grass violations and the posting of zoning meeting signs or notices of violation.

Prepares reports, correspondence, maps, charts, posters, and other visual aids to support special projects.

Assists in the planning and coordination of the Department's community outreach events.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field (i.e., Political Science, City Planning) or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Understanding of zoning principles and applications.


Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (preferred but not required).


Knowledge and familiarity with departmental, city, and state rules, regulations, ordinances, and policies obtained after hire.


Must possess and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license.
