City of Covington

Covington places a high value on preserving our significant historic building stock, while being open to innovative new interventions like solar awnings and contemporary but compatible infill construction. Our historic preservation program encompasses seven historic preservation overlay zones which contain almost 2000 buildings. The Preservation and Planning Specialist is the primary contact for citizens, property owners, businesses and tenants interested in preserving and maintain historic buildings within the City. They are responsible for all historic survey, documentation, public education, and historic preservation advocacy activities. They staff the Urban Design Review Board and monitor all federally funded City projects in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. In addition to historic preservation activities, the position serves as back-up to the City’s Zoning Administrator, and provides technical expertise related to planning initiatives and projects. This is an exciting time in the City of Covington’s historic preservation program, where we are working with the National Park Service and Kentucky Heritage Council to develop a cultural resources survey App, are developing a new Zoning Ordinance, and are reviewing the City’s Design Guidelines.
